Additional Documentation

As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit Driver Managers across our network, on a full-time, permanent basis for our Talent pool for: Bletchley, Northampton, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Snow Hill, New Street, Worcester, Leamington, Coventry.

Our Driver Managers lead a team of drivers in ensuring operational safety whilst contributing to improving train performance and achieving customer satisfaction targets. You will be empowered to make decisions, ‘think outside the box’ and influence business initiatives. As a member of the driver management team you will get to take the skills and experience you have gained in the driving grade and utilise these to help develop others. We’ll provide training to further upskill you in the realm of management and leadership that will not only help you do the job, but also develop you within your career.

The management of drivers is a 24/7/365 operation. You will have more control over your time management and get to interface with other functions across the business as a whole; building cross functional relationships that will help drive the business forward.

Requirements:

  • Ideally held competence as a train driver or train driver manager for 4 of the last 5 years.
  • Hold an ETDL with accompanying certificate.
  • Meet all requirements set in our operational standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of operational rules and regulations.
  • Experience of managing safety and quality standards.
  • Provide consent to the disclosure of any previous employment and safety performance from previous employers.
  • Train driving competency is an essential element of the role, so you will be required to drive trains to maintain this competency.

Desirable:

You will also be able to demonstrate excellent leadership skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver business objectives in a demanding operational environment.

A highly motivated individual, you’ll bring to the role proven experience as both driver and manager. You will be able to assess driving competence, update route risk and safety information and develop training.

Ideally, you’ll also have customer service experience. You’ll certainly demonstrate a genuine passion for customer satisfaction. Naturally, you’ll have a strong understanding of the rules, regulations, safety and quality standards associated with train driving and you’ll have the ability to interpret data and technical information and communicate clearly with others. You’re confident when dealing with difficult situations and you have a flair for coaching and motivation.

The role will involve shift work and on-call duties therefore it is important you have the means to book on and off at both early and late times, without relying on our train network.

Benefits at West Midlands Trains:

Free travel on West Midland Trains and Transport UK services for you, your partner and dependent children, 75% discount on all other train travel over most of the UK rail network and development opportunities to help you further your career with West Midlands Trains which include the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications.
