We are looking to recruit an Operations Director, who will report into the Managing Director. The successful candidate will be innovative, an excellent leader and communicator with previous experience within the transport industry.   

Transport UK London Bus operates bus services across London on behalf of TFL, plus rail replacement and event services across the UK. We operate over nine per cent of the London bus network, running c800 vehicles and employing around 2,700 employees across six depots in Central, South and West London. We run a number of routes, carrying over 150 million passengers a year on TfL’s contracted bus network.

Principal Responsibilities and Authorities:

  • To deliver consistently high standards and procedures across the Operations Directorate, and ensure maximum performance by all Depots, against agreed targets set by the Board. 
  • To be responsible for achieving success in key areas, such as:- driver and staffing efficiencies, driver quality standards, through to staff leadership and performance and building and maintaining positive relations with our partners and stakeholders. 
  • To be responsible for ensuring the Driver Recruitment and Training Team deliver a high quality and timely service whilst maximising the potential for driver observations and corrective training to be carried out.
  • Responsible for building a cohesive and effective working relationship with the Trade Unions and assisting the Managers in building their working relationships.

The successful candidate  

  • Must have excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Must have experience of working at a senior level within the transport industry and be able to demonstrate a track record of results.  Multi-site operational experience would be a distinct advantage.
  • Must be able to demonstrate they can lead and motivate the team and ensure targets are achieved as well as being able to influence others.
  • Must have a flexible approach to the hours of work given the multi-site arrangement of the garages and the need to respond to incidents as required.
  • Must have a strong understanding of the financial controls required to ensure driver and other operational costs are within budget.
  • Must be able to liaise with individuals at all levels including the board.
  • Must have a strong and sound knowledge of the London tendering market and the targets we are contractually bound to deliver.
  • Ideally you will hold a full PCV licence.
